Connect2Dudley's Review on the Evolving Care Sector
The social care sector continues to evolve rapidly, shaped by new policies, shifting budgets, and changing workforce dynamics. Over the past year, professionals across the sector have witnessed significant developments that are influencing recruitment, retention, and day-to-day practice. In this blog, one of our talented team member has shared their perspectives on key trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping the social care market today. Whether you’re currently seeking your next role or looking to understand the broader landscape, these insights offer valuable guidance for navigating this dynamic environment.
What changes have you observed in the social care market over the past year?
Tolu:
We have to mention the DfE statutory guidance—it’s likely to be one of the most impactful changes the sector has seen in years. However, I also believe local authorities should place a strong focus on supporting newly qualified social workers as they progress toward becoming experienced practitioners. The decision to remove the ASYE and introduce a new structure for supporting early-career social workers is a major shift, and I’m very interested to see how this develops in practice.
In what ways have changes to local authority budgets affected recruitment in the past year?
Tolu:
Locum roles have slowed over the past six months, making it more important than ever for candidates to be well-prepared for interviews and to submit a detailed, up-to-date CV. Working closely with a talent partner can make a real difference—they can help with interview preparation and ensure you’re fully briefed on any roles you're considering, giving you the best possible chance of success.
What advice would you offer to practitioners currently looking for their next role in social care?
Tolu:
I would strongly recommend that practitioners stay informed about the market—this includes understanding the various MOUs and current statutory guidance. If you have any questions, speak to an expert talent partner who can provide you with accurate and up-to-date information. It’s also wise to work with one dedicated talent partner rather than registering with multiple agencies. This helps avoid confusion, ensures clearer communication, and can actually speed up the process of securing your next role.
Looking ahead, what do you believe will be the most significant change in the social care sector over the next year?
Tolu:
I expect we will see a further decrease in the available pool of experienced practitioners, particularly in less populated and rural areas. As practitioners work towards achieving three years of post-qualification experience (PQE), the number of available candidates may decline. During this period, I anticipate an increase in the permanent market, with local authorities focusing on recruiting more permanent staff due to the restrictions imposed by the DfE statutory guidance.
